Requirements of ISO 50001:2018




ISO 50001:2018 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an EnMS. The intended outcome is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance and the EnMS.


The main changes compared to the previous edition of ISO 50001:2011 are as follows:- The adoption of the high-level structure (HLS) common to all ISO management system standards, which facilitates the integration of various management systems


- The clarification of key concepts and definitions, such as energy performance improvement, energy baseline, energy review and energy performance indicators


- The stronger emphasis on the responsibility of leadership and the need to align the energy policy and objectives with the strategic direction of the organization


- The introduction of the concept of risk and opportunity associated with energy performance and the EnMS


- The alignment of the EnMS with the organization's processes and incorporation of energy management into its core business


The key elements of an EnMS according to ISO 50001:2018 are:


  • Context of the organization: understanding the internal and external issues that affect its ability to achieve the intended outcomes of its EnMS



  • Leadership: demonstrating commitment and accountability for the EnMS and ensuring that roles, responsibilities and authorities are assigned and communicated



  • Planning: determining the risks and opportunities related to energy performance and the EnMS, establishing the energy policy and objectives, and identifying actions to achieve them



  • Support: providing the necessary resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information for the EnMS



  • Operation: planning, implementing and controlling the processes needed to meet the energy policy and objectives, including operational planning and control, design, procurement and monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation



  • Performance evaluation: reviewing the EnMS's performance, conducting internal audits and management reviews



  • Improvement: taking actions to address nonconformities and opportunities for improvement, and enhancing energy performance and the EnMS



Implementation of ISO 50001:2018




Implementing ISO 50001:2018 requires a systematic approach based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. The PDCA cycle enables an organization to plan its energy management activities, implement them in a controlled way, monitor their effectiveness and take actions for improvement.


The following steps can help an organization implement ISO 50001:2018:


  • Conduct an initial energy review to assess the current state of energy use and performance, identify significant energy uses (SEUs) and prioritize opportunities for improvement



  • Establish an energy baseline (EnB) as a reference point for measuring and comparing energy performance over time



  • Define energy performance indicators (EnPIs) to monitor and measure energy performance against the EnB and objectives



  • Develop an action plan to achieve the energy objectives, including defining responsibilities, resources, timelines, targets and expected outcomes



  • Implement the action plan by executing the planned activities, ensuring operational control, addressing risks and opportunities, and documenting the results



  • Check the results by collecting and analyzing data on energy performance, evaluating the effectiveness of the action plan, identifying deviations and nonconformities, and reporting on progress



  • Act on improvement by taking corrective actions to address deviations and nonconformities, identifying potential areas for further improvement, updating the EnB and EnPIs as needed, and reviewing and revising the action plan accordingly



To implement ISO 50001:2018 effectively, it is important to use data, measurement and analysis to make informed decisions about energy use. Data can be obtained from various sources, such as utility bills, meters, sensors, audits, surveys or benchmarks. Measurement involves selecting appropriate methods, tools and techniques to collect accurate and reliable data. Analysis involves processing, interpreting and presenting data in a meaningful way to support decision making.
